Advocacy Project
Perhaps one of my proudest accomplishments was my advocacy project. I took the information I gathered through my research when writing my issue brief and created a website (http://learnaboutbodypositivity.weebly.com) and short promotional video in order to bring awareness to the hidden health crisis on college campuses, which I proposed to be disordered eating. I then shared this website and short video on social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook. I was inspired to do my advocacy project on promoting healthy body image because negative body image is one of the leading factors that contributes to disordered eating and unhealthy habits in general. From my time spend on a college campus, the amount of body negative statements I heard was concerning and eyeopening.
TED Talk
My TED Talk was based off of my paradigm shift paper. My talk and my paper explained the trend over the past twenty or so years of how more students are beginning to obtain a secondary education at schools beyond the borders of their own state. Making a TED talk was a new and different experience for me but getting aquatinted with the one-button studio room and the resources available at Penn State were definitely a positive experience. Giving a presentation to a camera and an audience are different experiences and I was able to learn what may be successful in a presentation given in person, is not the same as giving a digital presentation.
Outside Projects
On top of having multimedia projects for CAS 137H/138T, for Honors Leadership Jumpstart I was part of a group that created a service project known as Hungry Lions. We are a group of six students who are bettering our community by providing Penn State the resources to create quick and simple meals in their one kitchen. We, as a team, created a website that consisted of recipes and blog posts. We also had a few events over the course of Fall 2014 semester to hand out cooking supplies and host a few cooking demonstrations.
